New Davis Weather Station

Well, I finally was able to purchase a new Davis weather station to replace my original Davis which failed last year. The new weather station is a Davis Vantage Pro 2 Plus wireless with solar suite. I also purchased a Davis WeatherLink to get my data on the internet. The station is in a temporary location and is not in an optimal position for accurate reporting. I plan to move it to a permanent installation this summer. I have one more major outdoor project to complete first and I don’t want to have to move it multiple times. This new station is twice as big and much heavier than the older Vantage. My current setup just wont handle the physical load. I’m also comparing to my other weather stations. The current website is being feed by a WeatherFlow Air and Sky. I also received last week their newer Tempest which is also under comparison. I have pretty much given up on my Netatmo as I can’t seem to keep batteries in the rain gauge or anemometer. During the colder months I have to replace the batteries almost monthly. It wasn’t that way when they were new. Someday I will do a blog on my experiences with each of these stations. Once I figure out the best way to post the […]

Website Update

We had a web host issue from the end of January until early March. The website was still visible, but we couldn’t upload any weather data to the site. This has now been resolved. I am currently working on repairing and updating the site. For the most part, the site is functional regarding current weather data. However, there are several “holes” in the past data. I am determining if this data can be repaired and if so, the amount of effort required. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

March 12, 2018 Snow

Snow March 12, 2018

We experienced a late season snow in Greensboro.  Local TV stations are saying the last time we had one this late was March 1992. For today, here’s how it went in the back yard… Started snowing around 10:15am.  Very large, wet flakes.  This continued until around noon, at which time it changed to a rain/sleet mix.  This mixture continued until approximately 2:00pm and then switched back to a lighter snow.  The snow finally subsided around 5:15pm.  I went outside around 6:00pm and measured the snow, which averaged two inches depending on where I stuck the ruler.  Of course, the most snow was on the trunk of the car which hadn’t been driven in a few days. Officially, at Piedmont Triad International airport (NWS office) the official measurement was 1.3 inches. Of course, any time it snows, I try to find time to take my RC vehicle out for a run.  The vehicle is 1/10 scale, so, no, we didn’t have a foot of snow (as the picture might suggest)! Renovation update

Over the past couple of evenings, I have managed to get the traditional weather data webpage functional.  While there are some more features to be added and fine tuning to be done, overall it’s not in bad shape.  If interested, the link is here.  You will find my weather station data, in addition to NWS forecasts and alerts.

Website Renovation Underway

I was able to do a little work to the website tonight, and here’s what I got accomplished.  I was able to take the free scripts and templates from Saratoga Weather and come up with a full featured method for displaying the weather data from my Vantage Pro. There is also an option for NWS weather forecasts and other data, very similar to the old HamWeather installation I was running previously.  While they give you the basics to get you going, there are a lot of details I need to sort through.  Once I have it the way I want it, I would like to see if I could merge it with this WordPress site.  Lofty goals, I’m sure.  In the meantime, here is what I have so far.  I’m sure there are some issues, and some of the standard offerings don’t apply to my situation, but it’s a start.  Now that I have something to work with, I’ll just take one configuration file at a time and fine tune it as time permits.  Again, thanks to Ken (and others, see this link) for providing the coding to get the journey started.
